The house

Casta de Vinos is known for a rosé with a cause. Claudia Horta created Pitaya, a Grenache, in memory of a friend who died of breast cancer, and since 2015 the house has put part of its sales toward women recovering from the disease. It is the label this Ejido El Porvenir winery is best known for.

Horta and Sergio Castañeda founded the house in 2010. Horta is a sommelier and the winemaker, and in Tijuana she also runs the restaurant Baja Terra. In the valley her work splits into two lines: traditional wines, among them whites, rosés, and reds, and Casta Natura, made with minimal intervention.

From the outside the winery is plain, and what's interesting is underground. A cellar of stone and adobe keeps the wines at a steady temperature, and the tastings happen there. The reds lean on Syrah and Mourvèdre, and the white Chardonnay comes from San Vicente vineyards. Among the natural wines is a Grenache, the Casta Natura Garnacha. Visitors see a modest building first and only then head down to the cellar.

Service is direct, with the winemaker behind every label. Book a tasting ahead by phone or email, then head down to the cellar in Guadalupe Valley (Valle de Guadalupe).

The wines

The house keeps its traditional whites, rosés, and reds apart from a minimal-intervention natural line, Casta Natura. In reds it leans on Syrah and Mourvèdre, and in whites on Chardonnay from San Vicente.
