The house

In 1986 the house launched a Reserva Privada Nebbiolo, which it presents as the first barrel-aged Nebbiolo bottled in Mexico, and the grape has been its flag ever since. The story goes back further. In 1928 Angelo Cetto, a farmer from Trentino, settled in Baja California and began planting vines with what he had learned in northern Italy.

His son Luis Agustín Cetto took over, and in 1968 he brought new Nebbiolo clones from Italy. Much of the craft was forged with Camillo Magoni, a winemaker born in the Valtellina and trained in the school of Alba, who arrived in the valley in 1965 at Angelo Cetto's invitation and worked for the house for more than four decades.

The winery in Guadalupe Valley (Valle de Guadalupe) is at the km 73.5 marker of the Tecate to El Sauzal highway. You walk through the barrel area and the plant, get a sense of the scale of a large house, and taste a catalog that runs from everyday wines to reserves, on a terrace overlooking the vineyards.

Private experiences are booked on the house's website, which offers everything from a four-wine tasting to a private tour of about three hours. If you show up without a reservation, confirm the hours first, since its contact page still lists them as to be announced.

The wines

A house with a broad catalog, running from everyday wines to reserve lines. Its signature is reds from Italian and Californian grapes grown in Guadalupe Valley, above all Nebbiolo and Petite Sirah, with Bordeaux-style blends under its most ambitious label.
