The house

Francisco Rubio planted vines in 2003 purely for pleasure, in Ejido El Porvenir (a community-held farming area), and nobody in the family imagined it would end up occupying children and grandchildren. The F in the name is his, though the winery clarifies that it stands for all the Rubios. Today three generations work around one vineyard in Guadalupe Valley (Valle de Guadalupe).

Alberto Rubio, a cousin of the founder, has made the wine since the early years. The rule of the winery is short and repeated on every label: only grapes from its own vineyards. They grow Palomino, Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Tempranillo, Montepulciano, Sangiovese, and Nebbiolo, nine varieties in a single ejido of Ensenada.

The labels tell the story of the family. The Tempranillo recalls the founders, the Malbec the bond between a grandfather and his grandson, and the Herencia Tinto is a tribute to the matriarch. The white blends Palomino with Chenin Blanc, the Herencia Rosado adds Montepulciano and Tempranillo, and the Reserva blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec.

Tastings are by reservation, on a terrace facing the vines. The table has a name of its own: Parcela 70, the winery restaurant, serving Italian-inspired cooking with ingredients from the valley and the port of Ensenada, planned around the vineyard's wines. You reach it by the Callejón de la Liebre, in El Porvenir.

The wines

F. Rubio makes wine only from grapes grown in its El Porvenir vineyards. It makes Bordeaux-style blends, single-variety reds such as the Tempranillo and the Malbec, and a white that blends Palomino with Chenin Blanc.
