The place

Four earthen cottages are named for grapes: Merlot, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Nebbiolo. Hacienda Eco-Domes built them with superadobe, a technique that stacks bags filled with earth from the site itself into domes, and construction began in 2012. It is at 325 Calle Bacanora, in the Las Lomas subdivision, in Villa de Juárez. The Merlot has two floors and sleeps up to four. The Zinfandel, the Petite Sirah and the Nebbiolo are for two, with a king or queen bed. Everything runs on off-grid solar power, and the water is recycled through bio-sand filters. The cottages have a refrigerator and cooking utensils, and the pool and jacuzzi are reserved for one cottage at a time. The house offers Mexican cooking classes, eggs from its own hens and vegetables from its garden. It is a place for anyone who wants to see how a building goes up out of earth and to sleep inside one.
