The place

Finca Altozano began in July 2012 as a grill for friends and family at kilometer 83 of the highway from Tecate to Ensenada (the number is a roadside distance marker). Years earlier, in the early 2000s, chef Javier Plascencia ran a small seasonal country grill called Asador Saverios, in Viñas de Liceaga. The cooking is grill-based and looks for produce from the nearest orchards, ranches and seas. The menu includes regional wines and Mexican craft beer, and you eat lunch or dinner out in the countryside, among the vines. At the same kilometer marker is Animalón, the same chef's seasonal restaurant, with a tasting menu served under an oak tree. Finca Altozano is open Tuesday through Thursday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. It is closed Mondays, and on weekends it pays to reserve. The restaurant's website lists the menu and takes reservations online.
